Don't wait until you're perfect.
So many women say to me that they'll come and get photographed when something has happened, most often the reason I am given is weight loss. I'll come to you when I've lost 20kg. I totally understand what that's like, but to me it points to a bigger problem. We aren't just putting off photography, we are putting off life because we are waiting until we are "better" before we start going for it.
What is your "20kg?" What would you do if you lost it, how do you think you would be different? The problem isn't what's on the outside, it's what's on the inside. As far as a photograph goes, I always take photographs in the most flattering way so that's not a reason not to be photographed, the problem is how we feel. You would be astounded to see yourself through someone else's eyes, it would be difficult for you to even believe it's the same person. The real problem is, that we allow 20kgs to hold us back from becoming who we are meant to be.
I want to share an experiment here, that proves that perception is everything. It shows that when being photographed, what the photographer sees is what you will see in the photographs 6-photographers-asked-to-shoot-portraits-of-1-man-with-a-twist. So really, it has nothing to do with what you feel about yourself and all things you think aren't good enough.
How would you feel, seeing yourself clearly for the first time? Seeing all those inner beautiful and unique traits that only you possess come through on the outside? We have everything backwards. It's not that we should do things after we lose the 20kgs, it's that we should do it, and then we will lose 20kgs. Be brave, and you will give other people permission to be brave. Do the things that you are holding yourself back from, be who you truly know yourself to be and you will astound yourself what what you are capable of achieving.
